 Spybot - Search and Destroy
This one is one of my personal favorites. I think this is the best spyware program available at any price. Best of all it's free, no credit card needed at all. I use this every other day on my personal computer. I have Norton 2007 and spybot always seems to find and fix the problem first. Be carefull because there are alot ot "spybot" fakes out there but this is a direct link to the real one. Download
Check the update feature before each scan and imunize after any updates to keep the system protected against hijackers.
This program is free but does accept donations to stay free. Try it, if you like it donate. If even a dollar it helps to keep it for all of us.
Microsoft OneCare Free PC Safety Scan
I found this while trying to fix a trojan virus I got from downloading bad software. It's an online virus scanner. Its great for when you get a virus or spyware that disables your anti-virus programs. Being web based it takes a while but its worth it. This is also great for a pre-instalation scan before new anti-virus is installed. Microsoft OneCare is also a great program for total computer security. Download
 Microsoft Update

One problem I run into often is that people forget to or just don't keep their Windows software up to date. It is so important, it helps keep out unwanted software, protect against system hijackers and keeps all the system files optimized. It can also help to keep device drivers up to date. Here are a few screen shots of what to look for.

 Windows XP sp2 & sp3
When using XP you'll want to watch for a small yellow shield with a "!" in the task bar at the lower right of your screen next to your clock. (if the updates have been there for a while they may have auto-hid so you might have to click the small arrow to see it)
 Windows Vista sp1
When using Windows Vista watch for a small box with a halo like the one pictured above in the task bar at the lower right of your screen next to your clock. This is to let you know that Windows has updates that need to be installed. Click the icon to install the downloaded updates.
